What is Noise-Induced Hearing Loss?

There are many causes of hearing loss; however, one cause, noise-induced hearing loss, is 100% preventable. Noise-induced hearing loss typically develops gradually over many years or decades. The damage to the ear from noise all adds up, resulting in the following symptoms:

·      Feeling as though people are mumbling

·      Trouble listening when there is background noise

·      Lack of clarity on TV or on phone

·      Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing)

Here is a demonstration by Dr. Kopke and the Hough Ear Institute simulating the various degrees of hearing loss.

This video gives the viewer an approximate feel for mild, moderate, severe, and profound hearing loss.

While hearing aid technology has come a long way in the past decade and can help improve life for those affected by hearing loss, there is no alternative to natural hearing. Prevention of noise-induced hearing loss is important.
